Nokia isn’t exactly a struggling company, but its share of the smartphone market is believed to be in decline. According to analysts at HSBC, it sold around 47 per cent of smartphones in 2007, but that share was down to ‘just’ 31 per cent at the end of 2008. Which is probably why the company is heavily rumoured to be joining the rush towards Android.
According to a report in the Guardian,’industry insiders’ claim Nokia is already developing an Android handset, claimed to be a touchscreen smartphone. It’s not some tentative research either, with those same insiders claiming Nokia will show off its new Android at the Nokia World conference in September, presumably primed for an assault on the Christmas market. Could it be the first ’smartphone-like device’ from the Intel collaboration? Only time will tell.
