Netbooks: we see a new one almost every week and yet in less than two years since their original conception, they have fast fallen into a blandly standardised rut, where each new model boasts almost the exact same CPU, screen size and memory as the scores that preceded it.
So DataWind’s take on the netbook, the UbiSurfer, comes as a breath of fresh air (excuse the pun). For starters it’s a lot smaller than the current netbook identikits, going right back to the origins of netbooks at a highly portable 7”.
You won’t find Windows XP on board either ; it’s Linux all the way for DataWind, and to be honest, the rest of the hardware would probably struggle with a Microsoft OS, with just 128MB of RAM, Samsung Arm9 400Mhz CPU and a single gig of flash memory.
